Rogers Principal Wears an Ice Cream Sundae as Treat for PARP

“Yell, really loud – We will turn Mr. Hickey into a huge  sundae!” said PTA members to Rogers Elementary School students as they roared their approval during a recent all-school assembly.

Students dumped ice cream, toppings, sundae sauces, cherries and whipped cream all over their principal, David Hickey to create a human ice cream sundae. Mr. Hickey “became” a sundae to reward his students for their participation in this year’s PARP (Parents as Reading Partner Program). The culminating assembly  also included grade-level relay races. This year’s  PTA-sponsored PARP theme was “Treat Yourself to a Good Book.” Students read, with a parent or adult, for 15 minutes each night with the school’s goad to read 1,600 “days.” The PTA also sponsored reading-related activities and held ice cream and pizza parties for the classes that read the most each week.
