The Jamestown Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Tim Mains as the Superintendent of Schools for the Jamestown Public School District, effective August 1, 2013. Mr. Mains currently serves as the Director of Internal School Operations for the Rochester City School District, a position that he has held since 2012.
Jamestown Public School Board President, Joseph DiMaio, commented on behalf of the Board, “Mr. Mains will be a wonderful asset to our school district. His professional background and track record of improving student performance will serve our students well. We are excited about his experience as a school leader, his positive outlook and his record of achievement.”
Mr. Mains brings an extensive education leadership background to the Jamestown School District. He began his career in public education as a junior and senior high school social studies teacher in 1971 with the Greece Central School District. Throughout his career, Mr. Mains served as a School Counselor, Teacher Center Director, Staff Development Director, K-12 Social Studies Director, Elementary School Principal, and most recently, as Director of Internal School Operations at Rochester City School District.
“Both as a parent of four children and as a family advocate, I have had the opportunity to engage with many educational leaders. Tim Mains stands head and shoulders above most of them. He not only speaks the language of parent engagement, involvement, and partnership but he lives and breathes it. It embodies the culture of his building and his staff. Parents feel welcome and are respected as experts on their children. He is able to achieve the equity of voice between teachers, staff, students, and parents so that his school sings. While his students, and their families, are among the poorest in the city you would never know it based upon the spirit that radiates throughout the building,” said Melanie Funchess, School 50 Parent, Rochester City School District.
Throughout Mr. Mains’ career, he has remained focused on student achievement. He initiated systemic change efforts, to ensure the effective execution of the state-mandated instruction and supervision in schools leading to increased student performance.
“Tim Mains is a seasoned and very intelligent educator who excels in creating a positive school climate for staff and students. He is politically aware of the need to build coalitions to move staff in the direction of change to meet the needs of students. He can be decisive when the need calls for it but also recognizes the importance of valuing staff input when making changes. Tim has proven that he has the ability to build relationships with parents and community leaders to support public education,” said Vince Coppola, Leadership Search Consultant, Western New York Educational Service Council.
Mr. Mains earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and World History from the Ball State University of Muncie, Indiana, a Masters in Counselor Education from SUNY Brockport, a Master’s in Educational Administration from Canisius College and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Columbia University. Mr. Mains is preparing to begin work on his doctoral dissertation in Educational Leadership at Columbia University.
Mr. Mains is a member of many professional organizations and boards. He has held community leadership positions in the City of Rochester. He served on its City Council from 1986 to 2005, where he reviewed the City of Rochester’s and the Rochester City School District’s budgets as the Chair of the Finance and Law Committee for 12 years.
Mr. Mains noted that, “I am energized by the opportunity to serve the Jamestown Public School staff, students and school community as the Superintendent of Schools. Jamestown is an outstanding school system. The pride and enthusiasm exhibited by all community members, students, faculty, and staff during the interviews was clear. I look forward to building on the work of my predecessors, and making contributions that will benefit Jamestown’s students and community. This is a great place to work and to learn at all levels. I truly am looking forward to becoming a member of this fine school system and community.”
The Board of Education conducted an extensive search for an individual to replace Daniel Kathman. Superintendent Kathman will retire from the District effective August, 2013.
The Board of Education requested the services of the Office of the District Superintendent for the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES in its search for a new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. David O’Rourke served as the Board’s search consultant and worked with the Board on all aspects of the search.
Dr. O’Rourke said, “Jamestown Public Schools is an outstanding community school system — truly a caring, student-centered school community. Tim Mains has an ideal background to share with the district and has experience that will benefit the school community. I am personally looking forward to working with Mr. Mains in our region. He is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced educational leader.”
