JPS Athletic Director Awarded Outstanding Administrative Health Advocate

Jamestown Public Schools’ Athletic Director and Coordinator of Health and Family and Consumer Sciences, Ben Drake, was recently awarded the “Outstanding Administrative Health Advocate” from the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).

In Chautauqua County, for the past 10 years, representatives from each district’s School Health Advisory Councils (SHAC) have gathered for a semi-annual workshop. Steps to a Healthier NY initiated the workshops and, for the past five years, Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES has planned and hosted the event. The workshops provide learning opportunities, as well as a time to reflect and celebrate each of the Councils’ successes.

This year, SHAC asked for nominations for “Golden Banana” Awards. Mr. Drake won for “Outstanding Administrative Health Advocate.”  From Mr. Drake’s nomination:

“As Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Health, and Family & Consumer Sciences, Ben oversees all things involving health, physical activity, and Physical Education for Jamestown Public Schools. Therefore, he is in a good position to bring changes to the nine schools in his district, which serve over 5,000 students. Ben is always supportive of initiatives that will improve the health and wellness of students, staff, families, and the community. He has the kids’ best interests at heart, but he goes about it in a practical way that isn’t too overwhelming for the people who implement these ideas on a day-to-day basis.  While he is supportive of healthy initiatives, he is also protective of teachers and their time.  Because of Ben’s support, students and staff in Jamestown Public Schools have healthy opportunities that they otherwise might not have.”

“As a district, we are proud of Mr. Drake and his accomplishments,” said JPS Superintendent Tim O. Mains. “Anytime one of our employees receives an honor for their work, it reflects positively on the entire district. We commend Mr. Drake on helping all JPS students lead healthy lives by providing exemplary programming in the district.”
