JHS English Department Receives Check to Purchase Poetry Books from Poetry Out Loud Winner

In March, Jamestown High School sophomore Chiara Raimondo placed second at the New York State Poetry Out Loud Competition. In honor of her achievements, The Poetry Foundation awarded a check for $200 to Jamestown High School for the purchase of poetry books.

Ms. Raimondo placed second out of twenty competitors, with her recitation of “Happiness” by Paisley Rekdal, “On Monsieur’s Departure” by Queen Elizabeth I and “Candles” by Carl Dennis. Ms. Raimondo also won the Western New York Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition in February. Jamestown High School students have won the regional title three out of the last four years.

Chairman of the 9-12 English Department, Barbi Price, accepted the check and remarked, “We’re so proud of Chiara’s effort and happy to use this money to buy poetry anthologies and collections by our favorite authors. I feel some Billy Collins coming soon to JHS!”
