Washington Middle School Community Garden Receives New Plant Markers from Students

Washington Middle School’s Community Garden recently got a facelift with new plant markers. Washington student and Garden Club member, Adrian Denson, asked technology teacher, Andrew Pihlblad if he could construct plant markers after school with fellow student, Daniel Cardinale. Once the markers were fabricated Washington Middle School special needs students painted the backgrounds and members of the Garden Club painted the labels.

“It was a wonderful collaborative effort that adds a little pizzazz to the garden and also serves a practical purpose – so plants are correctly identified, adding to the overall learning experience,” said Washington Middle School teacher Deb Szwejbka.

The Washington Garden Club will meet at the garden gate on each Wednesday over the summer to weed, water and harvest the garden. Students can bring home vegetables and herbs to enjoy with their families and in the fall, some of the vegetables and herbs are donated to the school cafeteria to be used in preparing school lunches.
