JHS Students Win 2015 Optimist Oratorical Contest

Six JHS students recently participated in the 2015 Optimist Oratorical Contest at the Winifred Crawford Dilbert Boys & Girls Club. JHS sophomore, Matt Leon, placed first, his second, first place finish in the competition and JHS freshman, Olivia Gren, placed first in the Girls’ Division. JHS senior Brayton Lydell came in second and JHS freshman Gavin Card placed third in the Boys’ Division. Freshmen Isaac Johnson and Alex Aversa also gave wonderful speeches during the competition.

The topic for this year’s speech was: “How my optimism will help me press on to greater achievements in the future.” Each speech had to be memorized and fall within a four to five minute time range. Students from Betsy Rowe-Baehr’s English 9 AT class and Barbi Price’s JCC Public Speaking and English 9 AT classes attended the contest to see a polished speech, and support the JHS speakers. Afterwards, one of the freshmen boys commented, “I am definitely entering this competition next year!”

Mrs. Price remarked, “We are so grateful that the Optimist Club provides this opportunity for our JHS students to craft a speech and deliver it before a panel of judges. The representatives from JHS comported themselves beautifully.”
