Jefferson Middle School Staff Visit Eastside YMCA

Jefferson Staff Visits Eastside YJefferson Middle School staff members recently visited the Eastside YMCA where students created a home-cooked meal and games to engage staff and families. The Jefferson staff visited the Eastside YMCA to promote positive engagement with families.

“We want to ensure that families feel welcome in our school and comfortable approaching any staff member at Jefferson Middle School if they have questions,” said Jefferson Middle School Assistant Principal Dana Williams. “We hope by opening up lines of communication, we can better help our ESL students both in, and outside, the classroom.”

Principal, Carm Proctor, and Mr. Williams spoke to the group about various ways to support their child’s learning including how to access the Parent Portal and what information is available through the portal, basic information on student curriculum, and encouraging visits to Jefferson Middle School to take a tour and see their child’s classroom in action.

The Eastside YMCA provides after school programs through its Middle School Academy that many JPS middle school students participate in. They offer homework help through Chautauqua Striders and a variety of enrichment activities including cooking, video production, reading clubs, science activities and Junior Achievement. This summer, the Eastside YMCA will be one of seven YMCA’s piloting “Power Scholars Academy Camp.” This program pairs enrichment activities, field trips, and summer meals with five weeks of literacy and math instruction from certified teachers.

“We already appreciate the Jefferson Middle School staff and their commitment to our community every day in the walls of the school,” said John Barber, YMCA Teen Director. “The willingness of school staff to visit Family Night, provides a tangible demonstration of that commitment for all the parents and students to see.”

Jefferson staff who visited the Eastside YMCA included members of the Family Engagement Committee and other volunteers: Amy Tousley, Jamie Sharpe, Evelyn Piazza, Stephanie Snow, Tara Hall, Allison Langworthy, Julie Livengood, Matt Turecek, Greg Duncanson, Martin Rich, Jeannine Gambrel and Kali Simko.
