JHS Announces 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Jamestown High School is proud to announce its 2015 Valedictorian, Sarah Gibson, and Salutatorian, Jennifer Roof.

“Congratulations to these young women for this outstanding accomplishment,” said JHS Principal Mike McElrath. “Reaching this goal requires a significant amount of academic focus for all four years of high school. It also involves a number of sacrifices in terms of time and personal commitment. We look forward to watching them succeed as they follow their passions in college and beyond.” 

Valedictorian Sarah Gibson is the daughter of Dr. Lynn Dunham and Charles Gibson. She will be attending Georgetown University and plans to major in Biology of Global Health with plans to become an internationally practicing surgeon.

Ms. Gibson has received numerous honors and awards including: Business First All-WNY Academic Team (First Team), National Merit Scholar Letter of Commendation, AP Scholar with Distinction, All-WNY Scholar Athlete Team, DAR Good Citizen Award, Jasmine Cantor Award and the Roskamp Award.

Ms. Gibson has been actively involved while at JHS in: Student Council (President), Varsity Soccer (Captain, senior year), National Honor Society and Ski Club (President).

“JHS has provided us with a diverse educational environment, which will be very beneficial for the rest of our lives,” said Ms. Gibson. “JHS has given me experiences that no other high school in the area could, and I know what I learned here will be beneficial for my future.”

Salutatorian, Jennifer Roof, is the daughter of Wendy and Lyle Roof. She will be attending University of Pennsylvania and plans to major in Biochemistry with plans to become a pathologist.

Ms. Roof has received numerous awards and honors including: National Merit Scholarship Finalist, All-Western NY Second Academic Team, English Chairman’s Award, Theodore M. Peterson Award in Chemistry, Chairman’s Choice Award sponsored by Cattaraugus County Bank, Davis Award, Jasmine Cantor Award and Jamestown Pediatric Association 2015 Scholarship.

Ms. Roof has been actively involved while at JHS in: Orchestra (violin), A Cappella Choir, Raider Reader Book Club, Impact Club, and in gymnastics and as a gymnastics’ coach.

“JHS is special because it has so many opportunities and excellent traditions in its music and sports programs,” said Ms. Roof. “The diversity of JHS has prepared me for college life by introducing me to a variety of people and has allowed me to learn how to better handle difficult situations that I may face later in life.”

Jamestown High School will hold its Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 26th at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater.
