Two JHS Employees Receive WNY Educational Service Council Awards

Jamestown High School Principal Mike McElrath and JPS Paraprofessional Val Hagglund recently learned they will be honored at the Western New York Educational Service Council’s (WNYESC) 11th Annual Awards Banquet on April 27th. Dr. McElrath will receive the Award of Excellence for Administration and Mrs. Hagglund will receive the Award for Excellence for Support Staff Services.

The awards will be given out at the 12th Annual Awards for Excellence program honoring teachers, support staff, administrators and Board of Education members. Nominations highlight how the nominee demonstrated dedication and exemplary service to the district and the regional educational community, how the individual demonstrated leadership, how did he or she make a difference in the district, and why he or she is an outstanding member of the district.

Dr. McElrath has been with Jamestown Public Schools for 19 years. Dr. McElrath is currently the principal of Jamestown High School.  He has also served JPS in roles as the coordinator of School Counseling, the initial administrator assigned to the Raymond J. Fashano Tech Academy and Director of Middle Schools. Prior to that, Dr. McElrath worked at schools Westfield, NY and Greensboro, NC. He earned his BA from Gannon University, his MA from Temple University and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  He also has a BA in Communication Arts; an MED in counseling and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. He grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School.

Mrs. Hagglund has worked as a paraprofessional in the Jamestown School for 29 years including Bush, Fletcher and Lincoln Elementary Schools, Persell Middle School and Jamestown High School. She worked in Compensatory Education Math and Reading for seven years, Elementary Self-Contained Special Education for 4 years.  In-School Suspension for 13 years and High School Testing for IEP, 504 and classified students with testing modifications for 5 years. Mrs. Hagglund was also the President of the JPS Paraprofessional Association for eight years. Mrs. Hagglund is married and has three children who all attended Jamestown Schools and five grandchildren.

WNYESC is a non-profit educational organization affiliated with SUNY at Buffalo representing 70 school districts in an eight county region. For the 10th consecutive year, it has sponsored an Excellence Recognition Program for support staff, teachers, administrators, superintendents, and board of education members. Those honored for this recognition have all had a very positive impact on their schools and school districts and the students they serve.
