JPS Holds Math Communities of Practice Professional Development

On October 11th, eighteen teachers grades three through six took part in the Jamestown Public Schools’ Math Communities of Practice. Communities of Practice is a district- level professional learning community that focuses on research based, best practices in the following areas: K-2 ELA, K-2 Math, and 3-6 Math.

Wednesday’s workshop was lead by JPS Instructional Coach, Christina Spontaneo. During the workshop, teachers learned new ways to promote the habits of mind called for in the Standards for Mathematical Practices.  They took part in activities that foster student engagement and, deepened their understanding of how to use Number Talks to develop their students’ ability to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Throughout the day teachers received instructional support from JPS coaches: Stephanie David, Danielle Russell, Priscilla Menzies, Jayme Genco, and Christina Spontaneo
