Tests for Students with Disabilities

Most students with disabilities are required to participate in all state examinations required for their grade level, including Regents examinations required for graduation. State assessments are administered with test accommodations as allowed by each student’s IEP.

Some students with severe mental and physical impairments may be determined eligible for the New York State Alternate Assessment in place of those required in the general education program. Eligibility for the NYSAA is determined by the student’s needs, as considered by the Committee on Special Education (CSE).

Students with disabilities who entered grade 9 prior to September 2011 may substitute a passing score on the Regents Competency Test (RCT) in any subject for which they have attempted but not achieved a passing Regents exam score. This option, available only to students with disabilities, may be used to achieve graduation with a local diploma.
