The Jamestown Public Schools athletic department offers a wide variety of athletic participation to students in grades 7-12. The department is comprised of 64 teams and 73 coaching positions, and includes 23 teams that compete at the varsity level. Approximately 1,300 student-athletes each school year participate on a JPS athletic team. The athletic office is the source for game schedules, practice schedules, directions, eligibility and regulation compliance, recruitment opportunities, oversight of coaches, scheduling of game staff, facility requests from outside organizations, and serves as a liasion between the organizations and leagues that we are affiliated with.
J.H.S. is a member of the Section 6 in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). We compete in the Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) as well as the Chautauqua County Athletic Association (CCAA).
J.H.S. has a proud tradition of athletic excellence. Our boys’ basketball team advanced to the NYSPHSAA state championship game in 2011, while finishing #1 in WNY and winning its 11th sectional championship and 10th league championship in school history. The football team has won three state championships (1994, 1995, 2000), as well as 10 section VI and 14 divisional titles in its storied history. The girls’ basketball team won it’s 10th league championship in 2010-11. Other varsity sports include baseball, wrestling, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls golf, boys and girls indoor track, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls track & field, boys and girls bowling, softball, and girls volleyball.
Our young athletes are able to develop their skills by competing on the modified level in 7th and 8th grade at our three middle schools (Jefferson, Persell, and Washington). Jamestown is proud to boast one of the premier athletic facilities in all of New York State. The football and track teams compete at Strider Field, complete with artificial turf and 8-lane all-weather track. The facility also includes an updated scoreboard, concession stand, bleachers, and press box. In the last decade, we have added an athletic field house and beautiful soccer, baseball, softball, and practice fields at our athletic complex at Jefferson Middle School as well. Jamestown High School is the home of the Red Raider basketball teams, who compete at James McElrath Gymnasium, also known as “The Mac,” one of the best gyms in Western New York. J.H.S. has also expanded its weight room with state-of-the-art equipment for its student-athletes, a new wrestling room, new tennis courts, and updates to the pool, allowing our student-athletes to enjoy the best facilities and training equipment around.
